Swords Castle

Swords castle was built in the 12th Century with the appointment of John Comyn, the first Norman bishop of Dublin, The castle is situated in the Ward River Valley Linear Park. Swords castle's perimeter of 305 meters, it is much bigger than norm for an Irish Castle and was constructed over a period of 400 years. It was the home of the Archbishops of Dublin and parliaments were held in the castles great hall.

In 1583 Dutch refugees were settled in the Castle by Sir Henry Sydney, the Land Deputy, and they extended and repaired the land.

The castle, which was renovated this year, is the only fortified residence of the Archbishop of Dublin to survive in such good condition. Swords Castle comprises of a chapel, banqueting hall, a gatehouse, apartments for knights, the Archbishops apartments and two large towers. One of the towers would have housed the areas constable and his family.

Swords Castle was bought by Dublin County Council in 1985 from the Cobbe family in order to preserve the Ward River Valley Regional Park.

There is a tourism information centre where visitors can find out more information about the castle and its history which is open from Monday to Friday.
