Rosscarbery Tourist Information

Rosscarbery is a small historic town set in picturesque surroundings overlooking a sandy inlet of the rugged West Cork coastline. The town grew up around a Monastery, which was established by St. Fachtna in the latter half of the sixth century. It is now a beautiful place with an attractive Square and nicely decorated buildings with traditional shop fronts. The wide variety of attractions for young and old within walking distance of the town make Rosscarbery an ideal tourist centre.

Rosscarberry may be a small village in West Cork but it has two stunning blue flag beaches to its name! The first of these is The Warren, a small, rural sandy beach backed by dunes. The beach is located at the mouth of Rosscarbery and accessed by turning off the N71 at Warren Cross.

The second blue flag beach is called Owenahincha. This beach has an extensive sandy shore. It is also a well liked holiday resort with camping and caravan sites located around the beach. It is an exposed beach and the sea can be quite rough at times and is particularly popular with surfers and other water sports enthusiasts. The main route to approach the beach is from Clonakilty on the N71, turn off at Burgatia Cross onto the R598, which leads down to the beach.

Rosscarbery has lots to offer the ‘active tourist'. At the Marine Leisure Centre, pedal boats, rowing dinghies or canoes are available for hire in the safest of surroundings and sailing lessons are available - whilst the children's playground and tennis courts are just nearby.

Visitors may experience the beauty of the area on horseback with and expert guide form one of the local Riding Centres or meet some farm animals at close range at the local Pet Farm and Agricultural Museum. For the angler, Rosscarbery offers estuary, rock, deep sea and fresh water fishing - with bait in plentiful supply. The Lagoon and estuary are great favourites with bird watchers as large numbers of duck, waders, sea and migratory birds are to be seen.

For the historian there are numerous stone circles and standing stones in the area - Drombeg being the most famous. There are many local attractions and places to visit - such as St. Fachtna's Cathedral, Castlefreke, Coppinger's Court and birthplaces of General Michael Collins and O'Donovan Rossa. Local tour guides will be only too happy to tell of local history and folklore.

Rosscarbery  is a "buzzing" town at night. Traditional Irish music spills out of the doors of the quaint watering holes while the trendy wine bars offer a chique and contemporary atmosphere. There are many reasons why Ross is not quite like any other place - it begins with the people. All this coupled with first class accommodation, restaurants; pubs in picturesque surroundings make Rosscarbery a unique Holiday Centre.
