A BER is a scale of comparison for the energy performance of a building ranging from A1 to G. It is rather like the the A to G rating for a household electrical appliance like your fridge. A-rated homes are the most energy efficient and G are the least efficient.
A BER certificate is compulsory for all new homes now and for existing homes from 1st. January 2009. If you are buying or renting a new house or apartment now, you are entitled to a BER - so do ask the seller/landlord or their agent for it.
There is a maximum fine of up to €5,000 for not having a BER cert when required.
A BER can only be carried out by specially trained BER assessors, registered by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI).
I create computer aided drawings for house plans and extension plans and also prepared planning applications and planning retension submissions. I am a Sustainable Energy Ireland registered BER assessor.
