Competition 1:           Strictly the Ratpack
Prize:
Win a pair of tickets for Strictly the Ratpack Friday 11th June, 8pm at the Cork Opera House

Frank, Sammy and Dean: no surnames needed for the trio who personified the glitz, glamour, sass and swing of Las Vegas in its heyday.  With a full West End cast and a 14-piece band, STRICTLY THE RAT PACK brings that era to life on the Cork Opera House stage on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 June at 8pm.

STRICTLY THE RAT PACK is a glorious celebration of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin and their legacy of living big - booze, broads, bright lights and to heck with tomorrow.  It's a musical toast to their easy sophistication, the way they loved and laughed at life, and to being true believers in having a fabulous time.

Cork Opera House audiences are guaranteed a fabulous time as they enjoy a string of classic songs including My Way, Summer Wind, Fly Me To The Moon, That Old Black Magic, Mr. Bojangles, Strangers in the Night, New York New York and Volare performed by a 14 strong band consisting of drums, trombones, trumpets, saxophones, bass and keyboards.

The original Rat Pack was a loose collection of drinking buddies centered on Frank Sinatra.  The name was allegedly coined by screen legend, Lauren Bacall, who said "you look like a goddamn rat pack" after a night of particularly heavy partying.  The lore continues that Judy Garland had lapel pins made for the group in the shape of rats with rubies for eyes.

STRICTLY THE RAT PACK is, as Frank would say, "class in a glass".  So book your tickets now, and drink up!

Competition 2:          Jèrôme Bel's The Show Must Go On
Prize:  Win a pair of tickets for The Show Must Go On Friday 18th June, 8pm at the Cork Opera House

"No to spectacle, no to virtuosity ... no to seduction of spectator"

Midsummer Festival presents - A cult figure on the international dance scene, Jèrôme Bel brings the Irish premiere of his most notorious work to Cork. Considered his signature work, The Show Must Go On is a delightfully subversive game of anticipation and expectation that blurs the line between spectator and spectacle. Provocative, ironic and anti-theatrical this production has charmed and outraged audiences around Europe and North America since debuting in 2001. Featuring 18 performers, 18 pop classics and one DJ, and music by Leonard Bernstein, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Edith Piaf, Queen and many more.  Be prepared for something different.

Jérôme Bel received a Bessie Award for the performances of The Show Must Go On in New York in 2005.

"Bel‘s work is genuine, if ephemeral, it is exciting, smart and great, great fun." DANCE EUROPE

"Provocative, cerebral and funny, this minimalist work erases the comforting distance between performer and spectator." THE NEW YORK TIMES

Empty spaces - what are we waiting for
Abandoned places - I guess we know the score
On and on
Does anybody know what we are looking for
Another hero another mindless crime
Behind the curtain in the pantomime
Hold the line
Does anybody want to take it anymore
The show must go on
The show must go on...

Excerpts from the lyrics of The Show Must Go On by Queen

Competition 3:         The Arcosm Company's ECHOA
Prize:  Win a pair of tickets for ECHOA Saturday 26th June, 8pm at the Cork Opera House

Cork Opera House  is delighted to present ECHOA, the major family event of the 2010 Cork Midsummer Festival.  ECHOA will be performed in Cork Opera House on Saturday 26 June at 8pm and Sunday 27 June at 2:30pm and 8pm.  All tickets are €15.

ECHOA is an hour of pure creative fun.  A dynamic blend of dance, drums and physical comedy, French company Arcosm seizes the stage with its electrifying brand of action percussion.

Described as ‘awe-inspiring' ‘jaw-droppingly energetic' and ‘very, very funny', ECHOA is an unexpected dance experience in which the audience sees with their ears and hears with their eyes.  A truly delightful attack on the senses, it is a show for music and dance lovers of all ages.

ECHOA is a world-wide touring hit, enchanting audiences and reviewers from Australia to America.  Drums of all descriptions are cleverly organised on scaffolding so that seven distinctly different dance scenes unfold below. With incredible exuberance the movement and rhythm become flawlessly intertwined as the artists explore the questions: How does a percussionist dance? How does the body of a dancer sound?

After a performance at the Edinburgh Festival last year, The Scotsman reviewer said "it's hard to conceive of anyone - of any age - not loving Echoa...a masterclass in how to engage a multi-generational audience...rarely is contemporary dance so instantly accessible and fun".

Cork Opera House acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council in making ECHOA possible.

Competition 4:         London Assurance
Prize:  Win a pair of tickets for London Assurance Monday 28th June, 7pm at the Cork Opera House

Broadcast live from the National Theatre of London via satellite to a screen in Cork Opera House.

Sir Harcourt Courtly is lured away from the epicentre of fashionable London by the promise of a rich and beautiful bride, Grace, several decades his junior. Arriving at Oak Hall, Gloucestershire, he marvels at this rural Venus until her charms are eclipsed by her hearty cousin, the foxhunting Lady Gay Spanker. Meanwhile his disguised son turns up in flight from his creditors and falls head over heels for Grace. When Lady Spanker discovers the young couple, she needs little prompting from the visiting chancer Dazzle to lead Sir Harcourt astray.

I am about to present society with a second Lady Courtly: young - blushing eighteen; lovely - I have her portrait; rich - I have her banker's account. An heiress and a Venus!

Dion Boucicault, the Irish genius of London theatre in the age of Dickens, wrote the brilliantly funny London Assurance in 1841 and thereby created - in Sir Harcourt and Lady Spanker - two of the great comic roles of the English stage, played at the NT by Simon Russell Beale and Fiona Shaw.

Give me the trumpet neigh, the spotted pack just catching scent. What a chorus in their yelp! The view-halloo, blent with a peal of free and fearless mirth! That's our old English music - match it where you can.

I might not have gone without winning the tickets so I really appreciate them. I came back to Cork on the train, laiden down with plants. Can't wait to go next year.
