WIT-led ROSE project to reduce stress for European healthcare workers

ROSE (Reducing Occupational Stress in Employment), a project across six EU countries led by Waterford Institute of Technology is to target 8,000 services and organisations in a drive to reduce stress and burnout among those working in the mental health and intellectual disability support sector. The project is being carried out in six EU member states - Ireland, UK, Belgium, Austria, Italy and Romania - and is the first of its kind in this sector.

Dr John Wells, Head of the Department of Nursing at WIT, said: "Research shows that employees in support and training centres experience significant stress, emotional exhaustion and burnout. As this can lead to experienced staff leaving their jobs, it impacts on the support available to those with mental health problems and intellectual disabilities. This is particularly significant during a time of great stress in society due to the economic downturn.

"This is the first online stress management programme developed to provide support for those working in rehabilitation, employment support or social care environments for workers in the mental health and intellectual disabilities sector.

"We set out to develop course that would help improve staff retention. By helping managers, trainers and support workers to deal with factors causing stress in the workplace and their personal lives, we hope to help improve their wellbeing and become more efficient in the workplace.

"Accessed online, the programme is available for staff to use on an ongoing basis. It is broken into two sections, one for all staff and one for managers which provides advice on improving the working environment."

In September, the website will be adapted based on the feedback we get over the coming months. The main attraction is that it is free and can be accessed at the users own pace.

ROSE is funded by the Leonardo da Vinci programme, part of the European Commission's Lifelong Learning Programme.

WIT is the project lead and developed the programmes in conjunction with the Department of Psychological Medicine of King's College London. Other partners include European Association of Service providers for Persons with Disabilities (EASPD), RD Consult (Ireland), Scuola Viva (Italy), Pro Mente Steiermark (Austria), Fundatia Alpha Transilvana (Romania), the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies (IRL) and Home Farm Trust (UK).
