Parades will be held in cities and major towns around the country and gardaí
are asking motorists to check local media for details of diversions and road
or street closures. Gardaí will be on duty directing traffic and working to
facilitate motorists and people travelling to parades and other events around
the country.
Dublin Parade
In Dublin the city centre will be closed to traffic from early morning and
people are asked to use public transport where possible. Full details of road
closures and the parade route are available on www.stpatricksfestival.ie
Spectators at the parade are advised to pick a spot to view the parade and
endeavour to remain at that spot and avoid crossing the parade route. Where
crossing the route is of absolute necessity, people will be facilitated at
identified crossing points which will be controlled by Gardaí. People are asked
to work with Gardaí who are giving directions along the parade route in order
to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable day.
All Ireland Club Finals
People travelling to Croke Park for the afternoon's All Ireland Club Finals
should note the road closures particularly the North Quays and O'Connell Street
and also the fact that the Luas will stop at Smithfield and they will be given
directions to Croke Park from there.
Motorists are also advised to check their routes to Dublin in advance to ascertain
whether any major towns have diversions or road closures for parades. Plan
your journey and give yourself adequate time as diversions may add to your
travel time.
Personal Safety
St. Patrick's Day should be an enjoyable and fun day for everyone. Unfortunately,
a small minority might see it as an opportunity to commit crime. Gardaí would
ask people to limit those opportunities by taking some simple steps to protect
themselves and their property.
People should be conscious of their personal safety and belongings in large
crowds.
Keep a close eye on children and make sure they don't wander off,
Do not display obvious valuables on your person.
Be aware of pick pockets and take heed of those standing around you.
Park your car in a well lit area and ensure it is locked and secure.
Do not leave valuables on display in parked cars.
Consume alcohol responsibly and observe by-laws about the non-consumption of
alcohol in public places
If you see a crime being committed, please notify Gardaí immediately.
