Get Down & Shelter is teaming up to bring you one of the founding fathers of the dance music scene. Chicago and Detroit Legend Chez Damier.
Born Anthony Pearson in the windy city, by the age of 11 he was working part time in a record store, by 13 he was experiencing the city's clubs.
Detroit was calling in the late 80's as went off to college but chance meetings with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson changed that. It led to the start of his Dj’ing and producing career mixing alongside Frankie Knuckles and co - writing tracks with Inner City.
Along with a couple of friends, Chez Damier opened The Music Institute in Detroit in the late '80s. Every nascent music scene needs an outlet. And The Music Institute proved just as important for the development of techno in the city as The Warehouse and The Music Box had been for house music in Chicago a few years earlier.
Damier, could have stopped there, assured of a place in dance music history. But, instead—and after a few years managing the KMS studio and label for Kevin Saunderson—he returned to his hometown of Chicago and, alongside Ron Trent, created a musical legacy deserving of an entire chapter. Between 1993 and 1995, the first 15 releases on the pair's Prescription label—widely regarded as one of the finest house imprints ever—crafted the blueprint for what would become known as deep house. And 15 years later the tracks they created together as Chez N Trent—most notably "Morning Factory," "Sometimes I Feel Like," "The Choice" and "Be My"—remain unparalleled examples of the genre.
When seemingly at the height of their powers, however, musical differences put paid to the partnership. Trent took sole control of Prescription and, for a year or so, Damier focused on the sub-label, Balance, before taking an extended break from the music industry. A handful of releases in 2004 and the odd DJ date hinted that a return was on the cards. But conclusive proof only came in 2009 when Damier committed to a series of releases for the German label Mojuba, as well as launching his own new project, Balance Alliance.
Chez's classic New York Garage style is bringing him on an European tour this year with stops in Berlin, Paris, Moscow, London (Fabric) and Waterford.
