Intemperate language describing threat in Ireland should be addressed - Timmins
The Minister for Foreign Affairs should liaise with the British Foreign Secretary Rt Hon David Milliband, MP, with a view to correcting and rewording inaccurate references on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website to the threat of international terrorism in Ireland, according to Fine Gael Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Billy Timmins, T.D.
"While I understand that the rating given to Ireland by the British website in terms of a risk of international terrorism is quite low, the language used to express that rating is in my view unnecessarily dramatic and over-the-top. A phrase such as ‘attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers' creates an atmosphere of danger that I believe is unjustified. Such an unnecessary emphasis on fear creates a false impression and indeed cedes the agenda to those who commit or threaten to commit terrorist or criminal acts of violence.
"Language is a powerful tool and to a significant extent can influence public opinion, therefore all websites giving advice on travel, but especially Government sites must be careful, balanced and accurate, in their descriptions of a country and its prevailing threats and dangers."
