Enda Kenny Welcomes Former PD Cllr Mary Mitchell O'Connor to Fine Gael Party

Enda Kenny Welcomes Former PD Cllr Mary Mitchell O'Connor to Fine Gael
Party

Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny TD, has today (Tuesday) formally welcomed
Mary Mitchell O'Connor to the Fine Gael Party. The Fine Gael Leader
said that the decision by Cllr Mitchell O'Connor was a very positive
vote of confidence in a re-energised and focused Fine Gael Party and
looked forward to her working with the Fine Gael team in Dun Laoghaire
to represent the voters that elected her.

"I'd like to formally welcome Mary Mitchell O'Connor to the Fine Gael
ranks and wish her all the best as she joins our Local Government team
on Dun Laoghaire County Council. This decision by Cllr Mitchell
O'Connor is a very positive vote of confidence in the Fine Gael Party
and what we are trying to achieve. When deciding how best to represent
her electorate, Cllr Mitchell O'Connor recognised the strength and focus
of the Fine Gael team in her area and decided that she wanted to be a
part of that team.

"This is the first move by a PD public representative to join an
alternative party since the General Election and, I believe, reflects
the reality that many of the existing PD public representatives are now
facing."

Commenting on her decision to join Fine Gael, Councillor Mitchell
O'Connor said;

"When I decided to join Fine Gael I made a decision on how best to
represent the people that elected me and on how best to continue my
commitment to politics and public life. Since the watershed for the PDs
at the General Election in May there has been an effective drift in
terms of leadership and renewal. A vacuum has been created at the top
of the Party - where Mary Harney is effectively filling in at the minute
- that has yet to be filled.

"As a result I started to question whether the PDs were the best option
for me to represent the electorate of Dun Laoghaire. I consulted with
my family and my supporters and decided that a re-energised and dynamic
Fine Gael team under the Leadership of Enda Kenny was the one I wanted
to join.

"I have been very impressed by the way that Fine Gael has been re-built
and re-energised over the last number of years where it has had
electoral success at both local and national level. I have seen a strong
Fine Gael grouping at work on Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and
I believe that I can represent the people of Dun Laoghaire most
effectively as part of that strong local team. Having made this
decision I am now looking forward to meeting all my new colleagues and
getting down to working on behalf of the people of Dun Laoghaire who put
their faith in me three and a half years ago."
